The Welsh post war fire brigades were formed alongside all the Scottish, Northern Irish, Channel Islands & English brigades after the 1947 Fire Services Act handing back fire control from The National Fire Service ( N.F.S 1941 to 1947 ), to regional county & county borough fire brigades / services !
Glamorgan County Fire Service formed in 1948 covered an area of 733 square miles & had 36 stations spread throughout this large county !
The cap badges came in 2 variations & 2 types of cap fixing, both chrome & gilt shield variation exist along with rear fixing of nut & bolt cap fixing lugs on the very early issues & normal lug fittings on the 2nd later issues !
This is a very early issued badge with the rear bolt & nut fixing attachments for fixing to a cap, in used but good condition with a gilt base metal finish to the shield & the centre fixed to the standard economy issue home office star via a long thin brass pin. A nice original cap badge from the 1948 to 1974 era for the Glamorgan Fire Service & a very early issue.
In 1974 the brigade disbanded & was amalgamated into The West Glamorgan Fire Service !
