Cumbria Fire Service was formed in 1974 after the Fire Services Act of that year amalgamated all prior county borough fire brigades into regional county brigades. 

Cumbria consisted of the amalgamated brigades of Cumberland, Westmoreland, Barrow In Furness, Carlisle & parts of West Riding & Lancashire making it a large area. Covering 2,698 square miles of area with 38 fire stations Cumbria had 2 main variations of cap badge being a large & a small shield. This is a small shield variation cap badge manufactured by J.R Gaunt of London. In good condition with the enamel centre fixed to the standard issue fully pressed Home Office star, both cap fixing lugs attached to the rear of the cap badge.
