A nice original H.L.I ( Highland Light Infantry ) cap badge of the ww2 period to this famous Glasgow based Scottish Regiment. Formed as an light infantry regiment after the Childers Army Reforms, merging 2 Scottish regiments, The 71st Highland Regiment Of Foot, The 74th Highland Regiment Of Foot & local militia plus volunteer regiments. 

Gaining many battle honours during its proud history, this famous Scottish regiment nicknamed “The Glasga Keelies” during The Peninsular Wars were soon involved in major battles, 1882 they landed at Alexandria on 20th August & through major fighting saw many dead & over 50 wounded at the Battle Of Tel El Kebir, a lieutenant from the regiment, Lieutenant Edwards gaining a V.C ( Victoria Cross ) !
Officially named Highland Light Infantry ( City Of Glasgow Regiment ) in 1923, the regiment adopts The Mackenzie tartan, also a non kilted Highland Regiment opting to wear the famous trews. One famous soldier commissioned to the regiment was David Niven who served both here & oversea’s in Malta in the 1930’s. He wrote in his memoires about his dislike of wearing them.
The mascot of the regiment is an elephant, the motto “assaye”stems from the famous battle at Assaye in India on September 23rd 1803 where the regiment fought bravely, heavily outnumbered British forces defeating the Marathan Empire’s Army & was in fact the first major triumphant battle victory for The Duke Of Wellington, Major General Arthur Wellesley.
The regiment merged with The Royal Scots Fusiliers in 1959 to form The Royal Highland Fusiliers & are now part of The Royal Regiment Of Fusiliers !
This cap badge has both lug fittings intact & a dull metal finish to the cap badge which shows signs of age. Uncleaned & original, a nice Scottish cap badge.
