There have been 2 Royal Navy submarines named UPHOLDER, the first was a ww2 U Class submarine & the second a Type 2400 Hunter Killer Nuclear submarine. Built by Vickers Armstrong at Barrow In Furness & launched in July 1940, HMS Upholder was a menace in the waters off the Italian & Libyan coast sinking many merchant ships as well as 4 U-Boats, an Italian warship & 2 troopships. Sadly lost with all hands in April 1942 on its 25th Mediteranean operation, its commander Lieutenant Commander David Wanklyn was awarded a Victoria Cross !
The 2nd Royal Naval submarine to bear the name UPHOLDER was launched in 1986 as the first Type 2400 Hunter Killer nuclear submarine. Known as the 2400 Upholder Class because of its displacement in tons & were powered by a powerfull diesel electric engine. They could reach depths of 200 metres & travel at 12 knots on the surface & 30 knots underwater !
