Formed in 1884, Peterborough Volunteer Fire Brigade remains even today as the only recognized Volunteer Fire Brigade in service, it operates within the guidelines & guidance of Cambridgeshire Fire & Rescue Service! Its current fire station built in 1984, the volunteer fire brigade’s centenary year, is situated on Bourges Boulevard in Peterborough & mans a crew of 6 (six) unpaid volunteers at all times! Regarded as a “retained” station, one of Cambridgeshire Fire & Rescue Service’s only 2 (two) covering Peterborough, the other being Thorney fire station & 2 (two) full time manned stations at Dogsthorpe & Stanground. The difference being that retained firefighters get paid a fee, Peterborough Volunteer Fire Brigade firefighters….get nothing!!
Initially formed by a group of local businessmen who regarded the fire brigade of Peterborough as somewhat ineffective after a series of devastating industrial fires, they formed this famous volunteer fire brigade to protect them.
This cap badge is in great condition, the correct chrome lugs attached to the enameled centre which have been bent slightly inwards, (common practice) to secure the centre to the home office star! Although a small brigade, over issued cap badges were sold off by London Badge Company, there are post 1976 copies in circulation but easily identifiable by the enameled centre fixings!
